Women's Day and Indian Women

 “You can tell the condition of a nation by looking at the status of its women.” 

This is a famous quote by Jawaharlal Nehru while addressing Indian women. The status of women is a striking depiction of the social, economic and mental condition of a nation. Women have been regarded as a symbol of spirituality in Hindu scriptures. Yet, they have been subjected to various social evils such as dowry, sati-system, child marriage, and female infanticide and inequality at the hands of a misogynistic society. Women’s Day marks the sacrifices of millions of such women who were undone at the hands of male cruelty but have stood stronger than ever.  

But times have changed and Indian women have progressed greatly over the years. They are gaining advancements and recognition in every field. Women’s Day marks the celebration of their valor and urges all of us to participate in empowering women all around the globe. Every day is a WOMEN’S DAY! 

Women in India in Ancient age

Women belonging to early ages were surprisingly highly educated but had to face the evils of society. Many activists like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekanand, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Jyotibha Phule, and others worked towards the upliftment of women. Girls were provided training in martial arts and acquired some significant positions in politics. Sarojini Naidu was one such key figure in this context. She was the first Indian woman to become a President of the Indian National Congress and the governor of a state in India.

Gender equality 

Women today are eagerly taking up various professions and responsibilities. They are enjoying equal respect and dignity in the family. They are raising their voice in both rural and urban settings despite various setbacks. Furthermore, females have rightfully been provided the equality of opportunity under Article 16 of the Indian Constitution. 

Educational Status 

The girls in urban areas are essentially at par in education with the boys. However, the number is quite less in rural areas of India. This disparity is affecting the social and economic development of rural India. The lack of proper hygienic facilities at school along with a shortage of female staff has affected their education. However, states like Kerala and Mizoram have overcome these challenges and acquired a universal literacy rate. 

Women and Politics

The maximum number of female politicians in the world are from India. Women have taken significant positions like those of President, Prime Minister, Speaker of the Lok Sabha and other high offices. Indira Gandhi is renowned for being the first female who held the office of the Prime Minister for 15 years.

International Women’s Day is all about making women realize their worth and giving them the right boost to achieve their actual potential.
